Hi!
Nice that you also look in here.In this tattoo blog you will find honest thoughts directly from me - from Bern
My name is Janosch, I am the owner of
Inkwerk Bern-Tattoo Studio, and has been working in the tattoo industry for almost 20 years.
I would like to share my personal experiences from these two decades with you so that you, as a reader, can navigate the tattoo world more consciously – because as the saying goes:
Not every mushroom is edible.
It’s the same in the tattoo scene:
Not every tattoo artist can give you the best possible result. Harshly said, but unfortunately true.
Step 1: Tattoo style instead of motif! It doesn't matter whether you're from Bern or anywhere else in the world when you read this tattoo blog.
Don't think about the motif first, but rather the style in which you want to get a tattoo!
After all, you wouldn't want to hear country music at a techno festival, would you?
Think about the bigger picture. If, for example, you fill your arm with lots of small tattoos, what will it look like later?
Chaos? Or a harmonious, well-thought-out image?
A colored tattoo or a black and gray tattoo? A realistic or geometric tattoo? Old school or neo-traditional?
Tribal or Fine Art? (I'll try to explain all the tattoo styles to you later
And please – do yourself a favor: Don't scroll through 20,000 tattoos on Pinterest!
Rather, allow your own thoughts.
Ask yourself:
Why do I want to get a tattoo?
Because it's cool? → Wrong.
Because you want to express something that lives inside you? → Perfect.
Maybe you've lost something, want to perpetuate a hobby, capture childhood memories, favorite movies, a band, or whatever.
But please: Not because it’s “trendy.”
If you do that, by the time you're 30, 40, 50... you'll be thinking about a cover-up. Believe me, 8 out of 10 of my clients do that—I mean a cover-up. The rest? The exception. 🤣
But do you really want to be the exception?
Step 2: Find the right tattoo artist
For example, you want a decorative mandala – spiritual, subtle, aesthetic.
Then find the best tattoo artist for this style!
Someone who doesn't copy, but designs your motif individually.
Why? Because you should be the sole owner of this tattoo.
Or do you want to be a cheap Stephen King print that everyone knows? 🧐
You will find five tattoo studios that offer this style.
What now?
Many people say: I write to everyone and take the cheapest one.
INCORRECT!
Look at the work.
Zoom in. Compare the lines. Look at healed tattoos!
Because the proof lies in the healing – not in the fresh image.
And above all, check: Is the photo real or over-edited?
If you see images that are too smooth and no pores are visible, you should be suspicious... it looks more like a porcelain doll than real skin.
Therefore, choose 1-2 tattoo artists you trust!
Step 3: Atmosphere and advice
Visit the studios.
Are they friendly but professional?
Do you feel comfortable? → Important! Because you'll be spending many hours there.
But be careful: the key is mutual respect – and you, as the customer, set the tone.
Yes, unfortunately. 😄
Now here it comes:
You like two studios.
The first states:
"Sure, we'll do it. Costs XY."
In the second one says:
“Yes, that’s doable—but we’d have to change a few things to ensure it still looks good after years.”
Who would you choose?
I hope the second one.
Because this artist thinks further than you do.
He knows the pros and cons and will always tell you what is best for you in the long run!
Step 4: Price? Investment!
Once you've found your artist, don't be afraid of the price.
A good tattoo is a 20-year investment – break it down to one year, and you'll see: it's worth it.
A unique, aesthetic work of art that belongs only to you.
And: cheap meat makes thin soup.
That’s what we say here – and it’s almost always true.
Many people come back later and say:
"You were right. I should have listened to you."
Because in the end, they pay twice – and perhaps only get half the quality.
A really good tattoo artist not only knows his worth –
He demonstrates professionalism above all through honesty towards his customers.
This also includes saying no sometimes –
not out of arrogance, but out of responsibility for a good, long-lasting result.
Because real quality also means not simply implementing every wish –
but to have the courage to want the best for the customer!
Conclusion: Quality requires courage

I choose my tattoo artists the same way.
It's not about the money for me – it's about people seeing my new tattoo and saying:
“WOW – that’s brutally good!”
That is my goal.
And if you still need to save, wait.
Because in the long run, you will be doubly happy.
Thank you for taking the time to read this long post.
I hope I was able to help you open your eyes a little – in a world that is often more appearance than reality.
Because as the saying goes:
Better to sweat without a jacket than be embarrassed by your tattoo forever. 😅
Regards,
Janosch
